We're back! With a short recap and outlook on 2024
Our most read issues, what you might have missed in 2023 and what to expect from us in 2024.
We’re back! Welcome to The Crisps–your weekly newsletter on anti-greenwashing and honest fashion communication. In this issue, we share our most read issues and what we were up to in 2023. Plus, we give you an outlook on what to expect from us this year. And we’ve got a special offer for all who claim their pro subscription until January 31st, 2024.
Long time, no read? We’re back after our short break and hope you’re ready for new issues coming your way. We’ve got lots planned for this year. But before we will share what you can expect from us in 2024, let’s take a quick look at 2023. Because the year was PACKED with content!
What you might have missed and our most read issues of 2023
We started The Crisps in March 2023 informing about the upcoming EU Green Claims Directive. Since then, we published 39 Issues and offered 20 issues entirely for FREE.
We took the time to reflect on what we covered with The Crisps last year and came to a conclusion: We’re not shying away from the challenges the fashion industry is facing. With The Crisps we confront them head-on and call them out.
We look at social justice issues such as why fair pay is the biggest wash and hush of them all, don’t ignore ethical concerns, and break the silence on animal welfare. We dissect multifaceted challenges and acknowledge hurdles that are hindering progress toward genuine sustainability.
Spoiler: Solely focusing on reducing carbon emissions doesn’t cut it. But of course, we also covered this aspect in more detail because being carbon literate is still super important! Otherwise, how would you know the difference between insetting and offsetting?
We also got into the nitty-gritty about cotton in various issues. In case you missed them: Most of what you know about cotton isn’t true was our most popular issue in 2023. In “Cotton is the best and worst of humanity” we spoke to one of the leading researchers Simon Ferrigno and picked up the trending topic of regenerative cotton and spoke about the similarities and differences to organic cotton.
What we covered the most in our anti-greenwashing newsletter – you can guess it – was greenwashing tactics! With an unwavering commitment to transparency, we shine a spotlight on greenwashing and give guidance for better and more honest communication. Our most read issues on anti-greenwashing communication included:
Cutting the BS on eco-friendly, non-toxic, and biodegradable
Chemicals in fashion: A topic most brands communicate poorly
Another highlight for us was our first-ever online workshop on 20th December 2023 where we dissected layers of greenwashing from greenrinsing and greenlighting to greenhushing. Understanding and addressing these layers are crucial for effective anti-greenwashing communication in the evolving landscape of sustainability and corporate responsibility. We’re thinking about offering workshops more frequently (which will be free for our pro subscribers).
What else we focus on? Regulations and standards and how they affect your business practices and communication. Spoiler: We will give you a glimpse into what you have to keep in mind for 2024 in our pro issue next week.
What not to miss from us in 2024
Starting into 2024 we want to say THANK YOU! to everyone who supported us since we launched in March. And to all of our pro subscribers – you can imagine how much work this newsletter is (every issue takes between 6 and 10 hours) so we’re forever grateful for everyone supporting our project financially!
So what can you expect from us in the future? We’ve got some exciting topics planned that include:
Greenwashing during Fashion Weeks where we look into how greenwashing tactics continue to permeate high-profile Fashion Weeks.
Positive examples of non-greenwashing or at least we will try. Turns out they are not so easy to find (or are we overly critical?!) If you have positive examples, please send them over! As a thank you, we will invite you to our next workshop at the end of March when we celebrate 1 year of The Crisps!
Dissecting greenwashing on a textile material basis because it seems like you enjoy this side of sustainability a lot. What we still wondering about though is:
Anti-Social-Washing Communication during Fashion Revolution Week where we will look at how brands exploit social justice issues for marketing purposes and how to do it better!
Current Court Cases on Greenwashing because anti-greenwashing communication is not just important for your brand image. It can have legal consequences.
We’d be thrilled to have you on board and have an exciting deal for those who are quick! Save 24% on your first year of being a pro subscriber (and supporter of critical analysis as well as anti-greenwashing comms).
This offer is valid until January 31st, 2024.
If you’re like us, you’re still slowly easing into 2024. So we wanted to keep this issue short and not too technical. Next week, we’re giving you an overview of the upcoming reporting guidelines and legal frameworks set to shape industry accountability like the EU Green Claims Directive, UK Green Claims Code, and the Green Guides by the US Federal Trade Commission.
So it’s an issue that is super relevant and will need quite a bit of attention.
Let’s make 2024 the year we’re best informed yet!
Best,
Tanita & Lavinia
